Amnesty International rates Prabowo-Gibran administration a failing record on human rights

Amnesty International Indonesia issued a red report condemning the human-rights performance of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka over the past two years.

Amnesty International Indonesia released a red assessment of the Prabowo-Gibran administration, concluding that the government has failed to advance human-rights protection since October 2024. Using political and socio-economic indicators, the report cited restrictions on expression, assembly and the right to protest, as well as policies that undermine community rights. It urged revisions to the Indonesian National Army Law, the Criminal Procedure Code, the Criminal Code and the Police Law, warning that current drafts could broaden official powers at the expense of rights.

The organization also condemned the awarding of national hero status to former President Suharto and the lack of an ad hoc court to address historic violations. Documented incidents include attacks on 406 human-rights defenders and more than 6,000 arrests during 2025-2026 protests, with many detainees released without charge. The government’s Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai disputed the report’s conclusions and denied state involvement in the attacks.

Why it matters

The report signals serious concerns about Indonesia's democratic freedoms and the treatment of activists under one outlet leadership.
