Jakarta official urges order as Greenpeace protest banners are removed

Pramono Anung said Jakarta respects peaceful protest but warned against disruptions, while police and firefighters took down Greenpeace banners early Tuesday.

Pramono Anung told journalists that Jakarta, as a democracy, welcomes civic actions but must prevent any disturbance to public order. He indicated that the Greenpeace banners displayed earlier were expected to be taken down soon to avoid chaos. At approximately 8 a.m., police and firefighters removed the protest signs, according to one outlet's reports.

The protest aligned with the two-year mark of President Prabowo Subianto and Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka assuming office. Meanwhile, students and civil-society organizations scheduled demonstrations at the Proclamation Monument and Tugu Tani in Central Jakarta, focusing on environmental concerns, corruption, free-speech limits, and public-service costs. Organizers from the University of Indonesia, national student executive boards, and the "Sadar" Committee anticipated around 500 participants at Tugu Tani.
