PKB Lawmakers Asked to Launch Parliamentary Probe into Vice President Gibran’s Education
PKB lawmakers received a request to start a parliamentary inquiry into Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s school credentials after a Constitutional Court ruling.
A coalition of public figures and NGOs has urged the National Awakening Party (PKB) faction in Indonesia’s House of Representatives to initiate a parliamentary investigation into Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s educational background. The appeal, delivered to PKB lawmakers Muhammad Khozin and Indrajaya on October 13, follows a Constitutional Court decision that found no convincing evidence that Gibran holds a high-school diploma, a requirement under Article 169(r) of the Election Law.
The alliance, comprising Lingkar Madani, the Indonesian Independent Committee for Election Monitoring (KIPP) and the Indonesian Parliamentary Concern Forum (Formappi), is pressing PKB, which controls 68 seats, to either launch a formal inquiry or submit a motion for the House to express an opinion. PKB spokesman Khozin said the faction will review the proposal after the parliamentary recess and may arrange a hearing with the alliance. Analysts note that an inquiry would need backing from at least 25 members and two factions, while a motion requires only 25 signatures, making the latter a more attainable path toward possible impeachment.
Why it matters
The move could trigger a formal challenge to the vice president’s eligibility, influencing Indonesia’s political landscape.
