Andalusian towns face voting imbalance as overseas registrants outnumber local residents

The Supreme Court halted overseas voting rights granted under the grandchildren law, exposing municipalities in Andalusia where foreign-registered voters exceed the local population.

The Supreme Court has temporarily withdrawn overseas voting privileges for individuals who became citizens via the grandchildren clause of the Democratic Memory Law. This move brings attention to an electoral paradox in Andalusia, where dozens of tiny municipalities list more voters abroad than inhabitants at home. In Murtas, a village of just over four hundred residents, the overseas voter roll dwarfs the local census, with roughly three foreign-registered voters for every resident.

Comparable imbalances exist in Granada’s Alpujarra de la Sierra, Cástaras and Turón, as well as in Almería’s Olula de Castro and several other towns. Provincial data show a steady rise in external registrants, especially in Almería, where most are based in the Americas, notably Argentina. Nationally, the overseas electorate has grown markedly since the previous general election. Vox warns that such disparities could affect seat allocation in future elections, labeling the situation a potential electoral fraud.

Why it matters

The voting imbalance could influence election outcomes and raises questions about representation in Spain's democratic system.
