ANO deputy calls for single-round Senate elections amid low turnout concerns

Radek Vondráček of ANO urged a shift to a one-round Senate voting system, citing the traditionally low participation in runoff elections.

During an appearance on Prima's political show, Radek Vondráček, deputy chairman of ANO, called for a debate on changing Senate elections to a single-round format, criticizing the low turnout that typically characterises the runoff stage. He said one outlet system reduces the chamber's legitimacy, as only a few hundred votes may secure a mandate in the second round. Karel Dvořák, deputy chairman of STAN, countered that a two-round system produces candidates with broader public support, contributing to Senate stability.

In the recent Senate vote, ANO failed to win any seats among the 13 candidates advancing to the runoff. Boris Šťastný, minister for sport, prevention and health representing the Motoristé, observed that low participation disadvantages parties such as ANO, SPD and Motoristé, whose voters often treat the Senate as less meaningful. He emphasized the challenge of convincing the electorate of the Senate's importance.
