Women’s representation falls as Senate election yields only one female winner

Only Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová of ODS secured a Senate seat, leaving the chamber with just one newly elected woman.

In the latest Senate elections, Zuzana Ceralová Petrofová of ODS emerged as the sole female candidate to win a seat, overcoming Martin Dvořák of STAN in the Hradec Králové district. Her victory brings the total number of women in the 81-member Senate to 14, a decline of three compared with the previous composition. Historically, only two women have ever been elected in a single cycle, a record set in 2018, making this result the smallest female cohort since the chamber was created in 1996.

The election also saw Jan Grolich receive the highest personal vote total in Senate history, surpassing the former record held by Jan Sobotka. The average age of all senators rose slightly, while the average age of the newly elected members remains lower than the overall chamber. Notable age milestones included Jakub Navařík becoming the youngest male senator at 40 years, and Zdeněk Papoušek, aged 69, being the oldest new member.

Why it matters

The drop in female senators reduces gender diversity in Czech legislative decision-making.
