Antisemitic Harassment and Violence Prompt Legal and Institutional Actions Worldwide

Recent incidents of anti-Jewish hate, ranging from threats against academics to public desecrations, have led to arrests, firings and diplomatic rebukes across several countries.

A series of high-profile antisemitic episodes have resulted in legal and professional consequences in multiple jurisdictions. A religion professor at Haverford College was taken into federal custody after sending threatening messages to a Jewish colleague, including references to gas chambers. In France, a member of the European Parliament removed and trampled an Israeli flag at a memorial, prompting condemnation from the Parliament’s president.

Italy’s foreign ministry publicly rebuked U.N. special rapporteur Francesca Albanese for her report on Gaza, and the city of Bologna cancelled plans to grant her honorary citizenship. In the United States, a New York public-school teacher was fired for praising Hamas leader Yahya al-Sinwar, and a Jacksonville teacher lost her job after a TikTok video claiming Jews control everything. A KPMG manager was terminated for calling a Jewish colleague a “Zionist pig.” These actions signal an increasing readiness to enforce penalties for overt antisemitic speech and behavior across academic, governmental and corporate settings.
