Anwar Ibrahim pledges personal oversight of UM student housing project
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said he will personally monitor Universiti Malaya's student housing project, urging speedy completion and warning that underperforming contractors could be replaced.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced at the inauguration of Universiti Malaya's new student residence that he will personally track the project's progress, ordering the relevant ministries and Kuala Lumpur City Hall to prioritize and fast-track the work. He cautioned that any contractor unable to demonstrate competence could be dismissed and replaced. Anwar said the initiative will serve as a model for subsequent student housing schemes across the country.
The development is planned in two stages, ultimately providing accommodation for as many as 40,000 students; the initial phase, delivering space for 10,000 students, is targeted for completion by 2030, followed by a second phase for an additional 30,000. He intends to raise the issue at the upcoming cabinet meeting to ensure the timeline is met.
Why it matters
Student housing shortages affect thousands of university students, and the government's direct involvement signals a push for faster, higher-quality campus infrastructure.
