Anwar presents cautious Budget 2027 amid looming election and coalition constraints

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim unveiled Budget 2027, opting for fiscal stability over bold election-time spending as Malaysia approaches its next general election.

Facing a general election within months, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim delivered a Budget 2027 that prioritises continuity and market confidence rather than spectacular voter-pleasing measures. The plan builds on a 5.7% macroeconomic growth rate and strong trade, channeling investment into projects like the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone. Social measures include a delayed minimum-wage increase to RM2,000, a RM2,500 entry-level graduate salary benchmark, and modest enhancements to cash-assistance schemes for the M40.

Tax reliefs were expanded mainly for higher-income groups, with no revival of the GST or new structural tax reforms. Health initiatives such as permanent appointments for contract doctors and the MediAsas coverage scheme were introduced, but broader reforms for elderly care were absent. The budget’s conservative tone reflects coalition arithmetic, as Barisan Nasional and other partners resisted large pre-election payouts that could shift credit away from them.

Why it matters

The budget signals how Malaysia’s coalition government balances economic prudence with electoral pressures ahead of a crucial election.
