Anwar says Najib’s pardon follows legal process, not political favoritism

Speaking at the Perintis Reformis Reunion Hi-Tea at the Selangor International Trade Centre, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim rejected accusations that he cleared the way for former prime minister Najib Tun Razak’s pardon, insisting that the right to apply for clemency is guaranteed to all prisoners. He explained that the Pardons Board reviews applications with input from the prime minister and the attorney-general, while the final verdict lies with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Anwar clarified that his previous remarks on Najib’s case were intended to address the ongoing legal proceedings, the substantial fine, and public confidence, not to influence the monarch. The king has issued a conditional pardon allowing Najib to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 2028, subject to a RM50 million fine. Anwar also reiterated the MADANI Government’s commitment to fight corruption and said the pardon does not affect other 1MDB or civil cases. He warned that any challenge to the constitutional monarchy will be met with full governmental support for the Malay rulers.
