Apple is testing under-display Face ID for the next iPhone Duo prototype

Apple is reportedly working on integrating under-display Face ID into its upcoming iPhone Duo 2, moving beyond the Touch ID used in the first model.

Reviewers have praised the iPhone Duo’s foldable design, though its return to Touch ID has drawn criticism from users accustomed to Face ID. According to Apple analyst Mark Gurman, the company is actively developing an under-display Face ID system for the forthcoming iPhone Duo 2, and prototypes already incorporate the sensor on the outer display. He linked this effort to Apple’s broader trend of embedding more hardware beneath screens, as seen with the reduced Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro models.

The decision to omit Face ID in the first model stemmed from the device’s thin display and the challenge of fitting sensors on both inner and outer screens without raising costs. The new prototype also retains the under-display camera and may adopt the action button introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro. These advances suggest Apple is seeking uniformity across both displays while enhancing biometric security for its premium foldable.
