Apple News shifts sharply toward left-leaning sources under CEO John Ternus

A study by the Media Research Center says Apple News promoted far more left-leaning stories and almost no right-leaning ones after John Ternus became CEO.

Researchers at the Media Research Center examined Apple News’s story selection during the last month of Tim Cook’s tenure and the first month after John Ternus took over as CEO on September 1. Their analysis found that the share of stories from left-leaning outlets rose to roughly 67%, while stories from right-leaning outlets dropped to about 0.5% of the top morning feed. In contrast, Google News and Microsoft’s MSN maintained more balanced mixes, with MSN even reducing the share of stories from both sides.

The study also referenced earlier concerns about Apple’s editorial leadership and past political contributions by executives. Apple declined to comment on the findings.
