Argentine court ends investigation into President Milei and sister over crypto meme coin

A Buenos Aires court ordered the dismissal of the criminal probe into President Javier Milei and his sister Karina Milei concerning the $LIBRA meme-coin controversy.

The Argentine judiciary has terminated the criminal investigation into President Javier Milei and his sister Karina Milei over their alleged role in the $LIBRA meme-coin scandal. Federal judge Marcelo Martinez de Giorgi issued the dismissal after prosecutor Eduardo Taiano asked for the case to be closed. The inquiry, assigned in February 2025, stemmed from Milei's recommendation of the little-known cryptocurrency in a social-media post that sparked a brief rally before the coin crashed.

Milei subsequently deleted the post, asserted he acted in good faith, and blamed political opponents for exploiting the situation. The probe had been probing potential fraud in the coin's launch, but no further legal action will proceed.

Why it matters

The decision ends a high-profile legal scrutiny of Argentina's president, highlighting the intersection of politics and cryptocurrency regulation.
