Around 30 Halo Trust deminers remain trapped as Houthi siege tightens Taiz
Roughly 30 deminers employed by the Halo Trust are still confined within the Houthi-encircled city of Taiz, where every supply line has been blocked.
Around 30 deminers from the Halo Trust remain trapped in Taiz, a government-held city now encircled by Houthi rebels, cutting every road to the interim capital Aden. The blockade has isolated the city’s population, leading to severe shortages of food, water, medicine and fuel, according to humanitarian warnings. The trust also reports that one of its staff members is stuck outside Taiz, unable to reunite with her children.
Recent Houthi attacks have hit Saudi-linked sites in Aden and a military camp in Shabwa, killing dozens. The EU has called on the Houthis to lift the siege, while the Yemeni government has appealed to the UN for urgent action. Over 600,000 residents rely on aid, including more than 200,000 children, and displacement numbers are rising sharply.
Why it matters
The siege endangers thousands of civilians and hampers demining work essential for post-conflict safety.
