Austrian Social Democrats overhaul leadership amid internal power struggle
The SPÖ announced a shake-up of its top leadership while party members watched the premiere of the film “Bruno - der junge Kreisky” in Vienna.
During the early part of last week, the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ) was still united as members attended the gala debut of “Bruno - der junge Kreisky” at Vienna’s Gartenbaukino. The movie depicts the early life of future chancellor Bruno Kreisky, a figure universally respected within the party. However, while SPÖ leader Andreas Babler sat in the cinema with colleagues, a coordinated effort to remove him from his position was already underway behind the scenes.
