Authorities seize 40,000 counterfeit items in summer street-vending crackdown
Local police issued 510 citations and confiscated 40,000 illegal goods during a year-long operation targeting counterfeit merchandise and unlicensed food stalls along the coast.
The operation concentrated on counterfeit goods and unauthorized food vending in popular tourist zones such as promenades, beaches and other crowded areas. Security councillor José Eduardo Díaz highlighted the intensive nature of the effort across the municipality’s 27 kilometres of coastline, describing the work as "very tough" and "highly complex."
He emphasized that the illicit trade undermines legitimate businesses by causing tax and economic fraud and may be linked to organized crime networks. Díaz called on residents to help by refusing counterfeit purchases and alerting police to illegal sales. He also confirmed that a follow-up campaign for 2026-2027 has already begun.
Why it matters
The seizure curbs counterfeit trade that harms local businesses and fuels organized crime in a major tourist area.
