Bangladesh questions Saudi Arabia over undisclosed executions of two citizens in Mecca

Bangladesh has asked Saudi Arabia for an explanation after a male and female Bangladeshi were executed in Mecca without prior notice to Dhaka.

Saudi Arabia executed a man and a woman who were Bangladeshi citizens after convicting them of committing "indecent acts" inside a mosque in Mecca. The Saudi government did not inform Bangladesh beforehand, and details about the alleged acts or legal representation were not disclosed. Bangladesh's foreign minister Humaiun Kobir said he was "very disappointed" and that Dhaka is now requesting an explanation from its bilateral partner.

The Bangladeshi foreign ministry is waiting for a copy of the full verdict and the circumstances surrounding the executions, noting the two individuals appeared on a prisoner list previously provided by Saudi authorities. The episode comes after Saudi Arabia's Supreme Court reversed a death sentence for a Sri Lankan national, highlighting ongoing scrutiny of the kingdom's legal practices. At least 175 people have been executed in Saudi Arabia this year, most of them foreign nationals.

Why it matters
