Bangladesh says Prime Minister Rahman's India trip will wait for strategic gains

Bangladesh's foreign affairs minister said there is no hurry for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to travel to India, emphasizing that any visit will depend on progress that serves Dhaka's national interests.

State minister for foreign affairs Humayun Kabir told reporters that Rahman's trip to New Delhi will be scheduled only after bilateral talks yield outcomes aligned with Bangladesh's priorities. He added that an agreement reached tomorrow could lead to a visit within a week or two, but there is no pressure to rush. The comments followed Indian external affairs minister S Jaishankar's reminder that ties between the two neighbours should benefit both sides.

Why it matters

The timing of the Bangladesh prime minister's India visit hinges on diplomatic gains, affecting regional cooperation and trade.
