Barcelona races to secure a new number nine before transfer deadline

Barcelona must sign a new striker within ten days as their current options dwindle, with Julian Alvarez blocked and backup plans pending.

Since the start of the summer window, Barcelona have prioritized adding a genuine number nine after the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, leaving only Hamza Abdelkari m as a viable option. Their preferred target, Julian Alvarez, is eager to leave but Atletico Madrid refuses any negotiation, leaving Barcelona hoping for an unlikely miracle. Recognising the impasse, club officials have activated two secondary strategies: pursuing Lautaro Martinez, who is open to a move but would require Inter Milan to sell him for a fee exceeding €100 million, and targeting 22-year-old Nicolo Tresoldi from Club Brugge, a €25 million option lacking the experience of the other candidates.

Hansi Flick has personally recommended Tresoldi, while Deco oversees the overall plan. With just ten days remaining, the Catalan side must decide whether to persist with Alvarez or shift fully to one of the backup options before the deadline.

Why it matters

Barcelona's striker search will shape the team's competitiveness for the upcoming season.
