Bavarian poll shows strong call for Merz resignation and surge for AfD
A new GMS poll in Bavaria indicates that most CSU voters want Chancellor Friedrich Merz to step down immediately, while the AfD is gaining ground ahead of the state election.
According to a GMS poll ordered by Sat 1 Bayern, a substantial portion of CSU voters are calling for Chancellor Friedrich Merz to resign without delay. The poll also shows the AfD narrowing the distance to the CSU, which has retreated to the vote share it achieved in the 2023 state election, marking one of its poorest performances. The Greens have managed a slight increase, while the SPD's support has dropped, putting its parliamentary entry at risk.
The Freie Wähler hold steady at around ten percent, despite losing a third of their electorate since the last election. The Left and FDP continue to register only minimal support, well below the threshold needed for representation.
Why it matters
The poll signals shifting voter sentiment in Bavaria, threatening the governing coalition and highlighting growing support for the far-right AfD.
