Berlin Greens divided as Left party wins election, coalition options debated

The Linkspartei emerged as the winner of the recent Berlin parliamentary election. Within the Greens, a split has developed between the pragmatic Realos, who favour opening talks with the CDU, and the more left‑wing members, who prefer an alliance with the victorious Left party. Both Green factions say the party’s lead candidates were poorly chosen and bear responsibility for the defeat. The internal dispute is seen as influencing how a future coalition government in Berlin could be formed, and no final decision on coalition partners has been made yet.
