BJP pushes Uniform Civil Code in Uttar Pradesh as allies stay undecided

Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on September 13 that the Uniform Civil Code will be implemented across all states governed by the National Democratic Alliance before 2029. For the Bharatiya Janata Party, the UCC forms a pillar of its ideological platform together with the Ram Temple project and the removal of Article 370, and state spokesperson Dinesh Pratap Singh said the Uttar Pradesh government will now move in that direction.

Some senior BJP figures believe the UCC could help counter caste-based opposition narratives in the upcoming 2027 state elections. Yet key coalition partners - Rashtriya Lok Dal, Apna Dal (Soneylal) and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party - have withheld formal endorsement, saying they will await guidance from their party leadership. The Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav criticized the move on social media, labeling it a political gimmick. No ally has openly opposed Shah’s claim, leaving the issue unsettled as the election campaign intensifies.
