JD(U) says Uniform Civil Code will not be enforced in Bihar despite parliamentary support

Senior JD(U) figure Shyam Rajak affirmed the party’s refusal to introduce the Uniform Civil Code in Bihar, despite its vote in favour of the UCC Bill in Parliament. He cited former chief minister Nitish Kumar’s earlier clarification that the party’s support was limited to the national legislation and did not extend to state implementation. Rajak rejected suggestions that the stance might shift under BJP chief minister Samrat Choudhary, emphasizing that the coalition government’s composition does not alter JD(U)’s position.

JD(U) legislature leader Shrawon Kumar said party spokespeople would comment further, while working president Sanjay Jha announced plans to meet Union Home Minister Amit Shah about the matter. Shah has previously announced that NDA-governed states aim to adopt the UCC before 2029, linking the push to broader women’s rights initiatives and a campaign marking Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s birthday.
