BMKG logs over 15,700 aftershocks in month following Flores 7.7 quake

BMKG’s monitoring shows a total of 15,722 aftershocks of magnitudes between 0.9 and 6.2 in the month after the main 7.7 quake that struck Flores on August 15, 2026. Weekly counts fell from 5,011 in the first week to 864 by the fifth week, indicating a decay phase. Of the total, 190 were perceptible to residents, while 26 events reached magnitude 5.0 or above, a level capable of affecting vulnerable structures, though none have been recorded in the past seven days.

Aftershocks of magnitude 4.0-4.9 numbered 476, and those between 3.0-3.9 totaled 3,308, generally causing no damage. The majority, 11,993 tremors below magnitude 3.0, were only detected by instruments. BMKG expects the smallest aftershocks to persist for several months, with magnitude 3.0-4.0 events likely continuing for another six to seven weeks.
