Broadcom seeks over $50 billion to fund custom AI chips for OpenAI

Broadcom is arranging financing exceeding $50 billion to support the development of a custom artificial-intelligence chip for OpenAI, with several major lenders in discussion.

Broadcom has launched a financing effort of over $50 billion to back a custom AI chip it is creating for OpenAI, according to sources familiar with the talks. Lenders including Apollo Global Management and Blackstone are among those being approached for participation. In parallel, Oracle is in discussions with Apollo and Goldman Sachs to obtain funding for acquiring the chips.

The moves come as technology firms confront steep expenses required to expand AI-focused data-centre capacity. Earlier financing initiatives by Broadcom involved a $35 billion tranche led by Apollo and Blackstone to support AI developers through 2028. The latest financing push underscores the growing demand for capital to sustain the AI infrastructure boom.
