Bronx stabbing leaves city school aide dead, friend injured, suspect arrested
A paraprofessional for the NYC Department of Education was fatally stabbed in the Bronx, and his friend was wounded, after an attack by a man with a long criminal record.
Around mid-afternoon on Wednesday, a violent assault unfolded on a Bronx street, leaving Department of Education paraprofessional Rashaun Shettlewood, 32, dead and his 33-year-old friend in stable condition after they were stabbed. The attack happened at Davidson and West Tremont avenues in Morris Heights, and both victims were rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital. Police identified 37-year-old Jeffrey Jorge of Brooklyn as the assailant, finding him with a knife early Thursday in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens and charging him with murder, attempted murder, manslaughter and multiple assault counts.
Jorge's criminal history includes 13 prior arrests, the most recent for a January 2022 stabbing at the same intersection, as well as a 2018 incident involving a knife threat and biting an officer. Authorities have not clarified whether Jorge knew the victims or what sparked the dispute. His arraignment on the murder charge was scheduled for Thursday evening.
