BT moves to acquire struggling TalkTalk amid debt and cyber-attack fallout
BT announced a takeover of TalkTalk, a telecom group hit by a major cyber breach, heavy debt and a sharp drop in customers.
Over the past five years TalkTalk has struggled with a costly cyber-attack, a loss of investor confidence and a delisting from the London market in 2021, leaving it burdened with more than £500 million of debt. Customer numbers have slumped, with retail subscribers dropping from over 2.5 million in 2023 to roughly 1.5 million, while the company remains loss-making despite £1.2 billion in revenue. Ares Management, its biggest creditor, has provided £235 million in December 2024, £120 million in July last year and pledged another £115 million in March this year.
BT announced it will acquire TalkTalk, appointing Clive Selley to lead integration planning and naming Martijn Blanken as his successor at BT International and chief-executive-designate of a planned joint venture with Verizon Communications. Regulators and competition authorities are reviewing the deal, and the fate of the TalkTalk brand remains unclear, with analysts suggesting it may eventually be absorbed into BT’s broader operations.
Why it matters
The acquisition could reshape the UK broadband market and affect millions of existing TalkTalk customers.
