Bucharest Court hears new hearing in constitutional-order case involving Georgescu and Potra

The Bucharest Court of Appeal held a hearing on the case against Călin Georgescu, Horațiu Potra and 20 others accused of actions against the constitutional order.

On 27 October, the Bucharest Court of Appeal examined the case filed last year that accuses Călin Georgescu, Horațiu Potra and twenty additional suspects of actions deemed dangerous to Romania’s constitutional order and national security. The court rejected a motion to revive a preliminary hearing that had been filed on 12 October. Potra faces charges of attempted constitutional violations, illegal weapons handling and explosives offenses, and has been under judicial control since September 2026 after being captured in Dubai in September 2025 and extradited with his son Dorian and nephew Alexandru.

Prosecutors allege the group’s activities, including the seizure of knives, firearms, explosives and large sums of cash during raids in late 2024 and early 2025, created a serious security threat. Georgescu also faces separate accusations of legionary propaganda and praising convicted war criminals. In a related matter, a Bucharest tribunal later terminated Georgescu’s judicial control after he successfully appealed.

Why it matters

The trial could set precedents for how Romania prosecutes threats to its constitutional framework and national security.
