CAF President Motsepe Mulls Returning AFCON to Two-Year Rhythm
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the federation is reconsidering a two-year schedule for the Africa Cup of Nations.
At a strategy meeting held in Cape Verde, CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed that the Confederation of African Football is weighing a shift back to a two-year Africa Cup of Nations schedule. The four-year interval, adopted to accommodate a new annual Nations League and touted as more lucrative, has drawn opposition from various stakeholders. Motsepe said the federation has been discussing the issue over several days and is examining every alternative.
He referenced his earlier announcement that the tournament would be held in 2027 and 2028, with the next edition slated for 2032, followed by a four-year gap. The review reflects broader concerns about the competition’s frequency and its impact on African football calendars.
Why it matters
Changing the AFCON schedule could affect African football calendars, revenue and player workload.
