Former Swiss international Ramon Vega announces FIFA presidential bid

Former Swiss player Ramon Vega says he will run for FIFA president, pledging reforms and restored credibility.

Ramon Vega, who earned 23 caps for Switzerland and played for clubs such as Cagliari, Tottenham, Celtic and Watford, announced his candidacy for FIFA president. In a statement, he said his campaign aims to reunite the global football community and deliver lasting reforms. Vega highlighted the need to restore stability, credibility and confidence in the sport, pointing to criticism of Gianni Infantino over the attempted sale of World Cup rights to private entities.

Infantino has indicated he will seek another term, but Vega believes he can provide the genuine change the game requires. The upcoming FIFA congress in March will host the election, where Vega will challenge the incumbent.

Why it matters

The leadership contest could reshape FIFA’s governance and the commercial future of world football.
