Call for stronger anti-bullying safeguards after student death in Kuala Pilah hostel

A teenager aged 14 died under unclear circumstances at a school hostel in Kuala Pilah, and a 16-year-old student is now in police custody as investigations proceed. Safety campaigner Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye highlighted the tragedy as evidence that existing anti-bullying policies are insufficient. He appealed to the Education Ministry and school administrators to boost night-time supervision, implement early-warning mechanisms, and make it easier for students to report abuse without fear.

He also called for prompt, thorough investigations of serious allegations and expanded psychological support for victims and aggressors. The letter stresses that a safe learning environment requires active enforcement of rules and a culture where students feel heard.
