Central bank's attempt to swap MBH Bank shares for Ultima Capital assets collapses

Varga Mihály's new central-bank leadership tried to exchange MBH Bank shares for Ultima Capital securities, but the agreement fell apart when a lawyer intervened at the signing.

Under Varga Mihály's direction, the Hungarian National Bank's foundation network prepared a deal to trade its MBH Bank shareholding for securities issued by Ultima Capital, a Swiss company associated with high-end real-estate assets used by Matolcsy Ádám’s business circle. The transaction was to involve Alpine Holding Kft. and partners such as Pinnacle Asset Group and Hungary Apex Investments Zrt., with Száraz István and Valkó Mihály slated to sign.

However, the appearance of Sándor Tamás, identified as a former lawyer for Matolcsy Ádám, caused the agreement to be voided. Subsequent changes in ownership of the Quartz companies meant the share block was ultimately sold to a group linked to Mészáros Lőrinc, with a small portion later returning to Matolcsy Ádám. The collapse leaves the foundation’s exposure to Ultima Capital unresolved, while criminal investigations continue into the broader asset-loss allegations.

Why it matters

It highlights the difficulty of recovering public assets tied up in complex, potentially corrupt financial arrangements.

How the sides frame it

LOW AGREEMENT

Left-leaning coverage emphasizes the failed bank-share swap and portrays it as a corrupt, wasteful scheme tied to Matolcsy’s circle, while right-leaning coverage centers on Matolcsy’s arrest and the new government’s anti-corruption drive.

LEFT

Exposes a shady, wasteful bank-share swap linked to Matolcsy’s network and highlights his detention on fraud charges

RIGHT

Reports Matolcsy’s arrest on fraud allegations and frames it as part of the new administration’s crackdown on former regime figures

The left emphasises

  • the MBH Bank share-swap collapsed because of Matolcsy-related involvement
  • the deal was described as a secret pact that wasted public funds
  • Matolcsy was detained on suspicion of economic fraud and document forgery

The right emphasises

  • Matolcsy was arrested amid a fraud probe
  • charges include fraud causing significant economic damage and a falsified private document
  • the arrest follows the new government’s vow to pursue former power figures for corruption
