CGT leader calls for higher wages and action against rising living costs
CGT secretary general Sophie Binet announced that the union will protest on October 17, demanding wage increases to combat the high cost of everyday goods.
In an interview with RTL, CGT secretary general Sophie Binet confirmed the union’s participation in the upcoming demonstration on October 17, emphasizing the need to halt the decline in purchasing power. She described how buying simple groceries or filling a car has become a luxury for millions of workers, calling for substantial salary increases. To fund these raises, Binet suggested drawing money from the wealthiest individuals, large enterprises and state aid to businesses, a move she says would also safeguard public services.
She connected the workers’ grievances with student protests against three years of frozen scholarships, noting a shared demand for social justice. While acknowledging other unions’ plans for a separate rally on November 5, Binet stressed the importance of coordinated action to pressure employers into negotiations nationwide. She criticized the economic platform of Marine Le Pen, likening it to austerity policies she attributes to one outlet government.
Why it matters
The protest highlights growing public frustration over inflation and could pressure policymakers on wage and tax reforms.
