Housing protest camp in Porto dismantled after alleged far-right infiltration

Organisers of the housing protest in Porto ordered an immediate evacuation of the camp after claiming extremist groups had entered and caused trouble.

During the early hours, the housing protest’s spokesperson instructed the group occupying Praça D. João I in Porto to dismantle their camp immediately, alleging that far-right elements had infiltrated the protest and were stirring conflict. A physical altercation left an alleged infiltrator with a broken nose and requiring ambulance transport, while visual checks identified roughly a dozen individuals with knives among the crowd.

The spokesperson claimed police were notified but took no action, instead redeploying officers. The protest, which had earlier voted to remain and set up tents, suffered a police raid that injured dozens of participants, including a person with a disability, and led to the removal of tents by municipal authorities. The movement outlined six core demands, ranging from rent control to increased public housing, and condemned the police response as excessive. Organisers indicated they will reconvene for further demonstrations in other cities.
