Chief Justice rejects Congress leaders' request to meet over voter list dispute

Chief Justice Surya Kant declined a meeting request from Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, saying the issue must be addressed through court proceedings.

Chief Justice Surya Kant sent a letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and opposition leader Rahul Gandhi refusing their request for a meeting on the ongoing voters-list controversy. He argued that such a meeting would violate the constitutional principle of separation of powers and that the Supreme Court cannot act as an administrative body. The chief justice urged the politicians to pursue the issue through a formal petition, noting that related matters are slated for a hearing on Tuesday and that filings can be made at the court or online.

Rural development minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan criticized the Congress's tactics as mere drama. Gandhi, speaking at the party's Indira Bhawan headquarters, said a delegation would go to the Supreme Court on Monday and seek the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged roll-revision irregularities. The request for a meeting came amid protests organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, which saw thousands detained in Delhi.

Why it matters

The refusal underscores the judiciary's stance on maintaining constitutional boundaries in electoral disputes.
