China's top security official warns AI could destabilize politics and critical systems

State Security Minister Chen Yixin cautioned that hostile applications of artificial intelligence could undermine China's political, institutional and ideological security, as well as expose critical infrastructure to attacks.

Chen Yixin, China's state security minister, published a detailed warning in the China Cyberspace magazine about the dangers of artificial intelligence when used by hostile forces. He argued that AI could directly threaten the country's political, institutional and ideological security by facilitating deepfake propaganda, bot-driven opinion wars and the creation of malware that exploits system vulnerabilities. The article also warned that AI-driven data mining could enhance foreign intelligence agencies' ability to steal state data, trade secrets and personal information.

Chen further noted that nations leading in AI might invoke national-security arguments to dominate standards and build closed ecosystems, echoing President Xi's recent stance on security. The piece appeared as major U.S. AI companies urged a slower pace of development, though no direct link between the two was made.

Why it matters

The warning signals Beijing's intent to tighten AI controls, affecting global tech competition and digital security.

How this story developed

  1. Sep 3 Investors Need $25 million for Anthropic, about $1 million for OpenAI in secondary market
  2. Sep 9 Starting Monday, Korea Exchange will allow nearly all Kospi and Kosdaq shares to be traded after the regular 3:30 p.m. close, extending the session to 8 p.m. The change aims to capture European-hour activity and follows the Nextrade platform, which previously offered limited after-hours trading for about 600 stocks. Exchange-traded funds are excluded for now, and a pre-market session is slated for 2027. Officials say the longer window could improve market efficiency and give investors greater flexibility.
  3. Sep 13 Anthropic has moved to file its IPO prospectus in late September.
  4. Sep 13 Altman announced the IPO will not proceed in 2026.
  5. Sep 13 Korea Exchange moved from planning to piloting an evening trading session for about 2,400 stocks.
