The CIA has alerted several European governments that Russia is preparing a new wave of drone attacks aimed at Mediterranean countries. Lithuanian defence officials, speaking anonymously, said the plan involves Gerbera drones about two metres long, hidden inside shipping containers on merchant ships, making deployment easier than with larger models. These drones can reach speeds of roughly 160 kilometres per hour and have a declared maximum range of 600 kilometres.
While their payload is modest, they could start fires, damage critical equipment or temporarily shut down ports and airports in Spain, France and Italy. The European Union’s technology and defence spokesperson, Thomas Regnier, said the region’s airspace has already faced multiple hybrid incursions, confirming the warning was not a surprise. The intelligence underscores growing concerns over unconventional Russian tactics in Europe.
