Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil condemns cyberbullying of UM student, urges reporting
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil denounced online threats against Universiti Malaya student Ummi Umairah Bakhit after her comments on a forum and urged victims to file reports with police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil condemned the bullying and threats directed at UM student Ummi Umairah Bakhit after she raised concerns about donations for former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's RM50 million fine during a public forum. He emphasized that differing opinions should be respected and that Ummi had not broken any law. Fadzil urged all cyber-bullying victims to lodge complaints with the police and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) without delay.
Citing a decree by Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar, he warned that online posts carry consequences and highlighted the MCMC’s investigation into thousands of AI-generated or offensive posts and hundreds of fake accounts targeting the king and Tuanku Muhriz. The minister also said the government is reviewing stricter regulatory tools, such as electronic Know Your Customer processes and age checks for platforms like WhatsApp, which remain outside the scope of the Online Safety Act 2025.
Why it matters
It shows Malaysia's effort to curb online harassment and protect free speech while addressing fake-account abuse.
