Comuns drops veteran MP Aina Vidal from upcoming election list, sparking internal split

Comuns spokesperson Aina Vidal will not run for re-election, a decision that has divided the party’s ecosocialist wing.

Aina Vidal, who has served as a deputy since 2015 and was a key figure for the Sumar parliamentary group, will not be included on the Comuns-Front Ampli slate for the forthcoming general election. The party’s national council ratified the four Catalan constituency lists with 59% approval, leaving a notable 31% dissent and 10% abstention, indicating a contentious internal process. While some members urged a reconsideration of Vidal’s exclusion and suggested she could have been placed third on the list, the proposal was not adopted.

The party announced that Vidal will continue as its spokesperson and will take part in the campaign’s press activities. Other notable candidates include Ada Colau, Ernest Urtasun, and Júlia Boada, with several incumbents also not seeking re-election.

Why it matters

The removal of a senior MP highlights factional tensions within Comuns ahead of a crucial election.
