Conservative CGPJ members back Judge Biedma as progressive bloc blocks statement

Ten conservative members of the Consejo General del Poder Judicial voiced support for Judge Beatriz Biedma amid alleged intimidation, but the proposal was blocked by the nine progressive members.

Ten members of the Consejo General del Poder Judicial, nominated by the PP, announced their backing of Judge Beatriz Biedma of Badajoz, who is handling the criminal investigation of David Sánchez, the government leader's sibling. They described a pattern of harassment aimed at deterring her work and proposed an institutional declaration expressing deep concern and solidarity. The draft also warned that no judge should operate under fear or pressure and reiterated the role of judicial independence as a safeguard for citizens.

The proposal required approval from all CGPJ members, but the nine judges aligned with the PSOE opposed it, halting the statement's publication. This marks the first break in the CGPJ's tradition of consensus statements during one outlet mandate, reflecting growing tension between the conservative and progressive blocs over perceived attacks on the judiciary.
