Constitutional Court to convene judges next week on Grandchildren Law challenge
The Constitutional Court will summon its judges on Monday to address the Defender of the People’s appeal against the grandchildren citizenship law.
Following the Defender of the People’s constitutional appeal against the law granting citizenship to grandchildren of Spaniards, the Constitutional Court will convene its judges on Monday. Cándido Conde-Pumpido confirmed that Enrique Arnaldo will serve as the designated rapporteur for the admission of the challenge. Inmaculada Montalbán, who leads the Second Chamber’s Fourth Section, is set to gather the magistrates at the start of the coming week.
The Defender’s request calls for “extremely urgent” safeguards to neutralise the provisional measures imposed by the Supreme Court’s Third Chamber. Those measures stem from a main proceeding initiated by two separate appeals filed by Vox and Iustitia Europa. The court’s swift activation signals the importance of resolving the electoral census issue for absent residents who have obtained nationality under the grandchildren law.
Why it matters
The ruling will determine voting rights for naturalised citizens under the controversial grandchildren law.
