Electoral Board opens sanction file against Prime Minister Sánchez for election-related remarks

Spain's Central Electoral Board has initiated a disciplinary proceeding against Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, alleging that his post-cabinet press comments breached rules on using official acts for electoral purposes.

The Central Electoral Board decided to open a sanction file against Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez following remarks made at a press briefing after a cabinet meeting. The Board found that his comments, which highlighted government successes, attacked opposition parties and urged the need for a stronger parliamentary majority, may have breached the prohibition on using official acts for electoral gain. While the decision acknowledges partial merit in complaints lodged by the PP and the group Se Acabó la Fiesta, it stops short of imposing a definitive fine.

Sánchez is given a ten-day window to present his arguments, and the Board noted his prior awareness of institutional neutrality rules after earlier sanctions. The outcome of the proceeding will determine any monetary penalty.

Why it matters

The case tests the enforcement of electoral neutrality rules on high-level officials ahead of national elections.
