Violeta Alonso condemns Supreme Court voting suspension as illegal and attacks PP and Vox
Violeta Alonso, key architect of the overseas grandchildren law, denounced the Supreme Court's suspension of voting rights for naturalised Spaniards abroad and criticised the PP and Vox for not defending those rights.
Violeta Alonso, who championed the law granting Spanish citizenship to grandchildren of exiles living overseas, told TVE that the Supreme Court's suspension of voting for naturalised Spaniards abroad is effectively illegal. She highlighted that the court gave a five-day deadline for appeals, yet notifications are issued only by public notice, leaving many unaware of their status. Alonso noted that the CERA does not contain information on how these people obtained citizenship, making it impossible to compile a list before the election.
She described the measure as discriminatory based on residence and contrary to the Spanish Citizenship Statute for expatriates. Additionally, Alonso criticised the Partido Popular and Vox for failing to defend the voting rights of citizens living abroad.
Why it matters
The dispute could disenfranchise thousands of naturalised Spaniards abroad in an upcoming election.
