Government warns of severe vote restrictions and condemns PP and Vox rhetoric
The Spanish government says limiting voting rights is a grave breach of the constitution and accuses the PP and Vox of politicising the issue.
In a statement to the cabinet, the Spanish government labeled any effort to restrict the right to vote as a serious constitutional breach. Officials accused the Popular Party and Vox of exploiting the debate over the grandchildren law to create uncertainty, likening the tactic to "trumpism." The Supreme Court recently upheld a suspension of the law's impact on the electoral register, which could affect naturalised Spaniards descended from Franco-era exiles.
Elma Saiz reiterated the government's commitment to obey court decisions but warned of the extraordinary seriousness of the situation. She indicated that the State's legal department is reviewing options, including filing an appeal before the Constitutional Court. The government suggested that affected individuals might also seek protection through constitutional remedies.
Why it matters
Restricting voting rights could alter the electorate and challenge Spain's democratic guarantees.
