DAP MP calls for anti-corruption probe into Zahid Hamidi over RM2.1 billion road project gap

A DAP parliamentarian has asked the anti-corruption agency to investigate Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi’s role in a RM2.1 billion shortfall between allocation and spending for a rural road scheme.

DAP representative Chong lodged a complaint with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (SPRM) in Kuala Lumpur, demanding a free-standing investigation into Deputy Prime Minister Zahid Hamidi’s involvement in a RM2.1 billion discrepancy between the budget and actual outlays for a rural road project managed by KKDW. The request came after SPRM chief Abd Halim Aman said the agency would probe the matter once a formal complaint was received.

Chong emphasized the need to verify whether financial commitments were made before the necessary funding was approved and to check for any misuse of authority or irregularities in procurement and payment processes. He also asked for a review of related contracts and financial documents to establish the timing of any budget adjustments. The demand follows remarks by Deputy Treasury Secretary (Policy) Zamzuri Abdul Aziz, who said the issue had been settled without providing specifics, and previous denials by Zahid that KKDW had overspent beyond approved limits, despite Treasury Secretary Johan Mahmood Merican noting past over-commitments.

Why it matters

The probe could reveal misuse of public money in a major infrastructure program and affect public trust in government officials.
