Delhi braces for fresh protests as traffic police flag 30 choke points around Jantar Mantar
Delhi authorities have kept Jantar Mantar barricaded and warned of possible disruptions at 30 key traffic points as new protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar loom.
For a second consecutive day, Jantar Mantar and its approaches stayed sealed off as Delhi prepared for possible fresh demonstrations targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The Delhi Traffic Police announced that 30 strategic points, ranging from the Ashoka Road-Jantar Mantar Road roundabout to the Jai Singh Road-Sansad Marg crossing, could see traffic regulation starting at 6 a.m. Additional stretches such as the Dhaula Kuan and Lodhi Road flyovers may also face restrictions.
Authorities have divided the New Delhi district into 20 zones, each overseen by a deputy commissioner-rank officer, and installed 37 barricades to block protester access. On Saturday, about 41,000 security personnel detained 7,000 people, including four former chief ministers and leaders of the satirical Cockroach Janta Party, in an effort to stop a rally demanding Kumar’s resignation. Sporadic protests continued throughout the city, while the Supreme Court scheduled a special hearing on the crackdown.
Why it matters
The restrictions could disrupt daily commutes and signal escalating tension over the election commission's leadership.
