Delhi inspections reveal expired foods, pests and unsafe ghee ahead of festivals

Food safety officials in Delhi found expired frozen peas, yoghurt and brownies, as well as insects and a lizard at several storage sites, and flagged unsafe ghee samples.

Delhi food-safety teams inspected multiple premises ahead of the festival season and uncovered several violations. In Uttam Nagar, frozen green peas, Greek yoghurt, eggless chocolate-chip brownies and cow ghee were all past their expiry dates. Inspectors at a Wazirpur Industrial Area site reported flies, mosquitoes, a lizard, spider webs and the absence of a documented cleaning schedule.

A major online food aggregator’s Daryaganj warehouse was found with dirty crates, dust accumulation and inadequate rat-trap placement. Laboratory analysis of 59 desi ghee samples revealed 19 unsafe products and four that did not meet safety standards. The officials issued improvement notices and have been instructed to tighten monitoring of markets and food-storage facilities before the upcoming festivals.
