Delhi prepares for CJP, AAP and left protests with transport shutdowns and liquor bans

Delhi authorities have ordered the closure of retail liquor shops, restricted entry at 57 metro stations and cancelled several Mail and Express trains on October 10 as the Cockroach Janta Party, AAP student groups and left organisations plan protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Ahead of a planned protest on October 10 targeting Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, Delhi officials have issued a series of restrictions. All retail liquor shops across the city will remain closed on October 9 and 10, though licensed restaurants, bars and clubs can continue to serve alcohol. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation will seal entry and exit gates at 57 stations, including major interchanges, from 9 p.m. on October 9 until further notice on October 10, while interchange facilities stay open.

Indian Railways will cancel several Mail and Express trains scheduled to arrive at New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin stations between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m. on October 10, and the NCR Transport Corporation will shut the Sarai Kale Khan and New Ashok Nagar Namo Bharat stations for the same period. Police have refused a protest permit for the Cockroach Janta Party at Jantar Mantar, citing insufficient notice and previous violations of directives. Neighboring states Uttar Pradesh and Haryana have also been alerted to the potential disruptions.

Why it matters

The disruptions affect daily commuters, businesses and highlight political tension over voter-list revisions in India's capital.
