Democrats clash over whether to court or condemn Twitch streamer Hasan Piker

In a recent congressional hearing, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez dismissed the focus on Twitch personality Hasan Piker as excessive, questioning why elected officials devote so much time to a streamer. Pramila Jayapal cautioned against blanket endorsement of his opinions but emphasized the strategic importance of engaging his followers. Josh Gottheimer called for outright denunciation of Piker’s remarks, labeling any softer stance unacceptable.

By contrast, Bernie Sanders and Michigan Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed argued that reaching Piker’s three-million listeners is essential for voter outreach, even as the streamer has faced backlash for past comments on 9/11 and other topics. Democratic strategist Kaivan Schroff noted the tension between courting the influencer and the risk of associating with his controversial statements, while RNC spokesman Max Lippel accused Democrats of forgetting Piker’s extremist views after initially welcoming him.
