Democrats gain ground in five traditionally Republican states ahead of U.S. midterms

New polling shows Democratic candidates narrowing gaps or overtaking Republicans in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio and Texas as the midterm elections approach.

One month before the U.S. midterm elections, one outlet and Siena survey reveals a steady increase in backing for Democratic Senate contenders in Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio and Texas, states that have historically leaned Republican. Economic dissatisfaction—declining household incomes, higher prices and fuel shortages—has pushed many respondents toward Democratic choices, especially in Alaska and Texas. In the Midwest states, at least two-thirds of those surveyed view their state economies negatively, while Texas shows a split opinion on economic performance.

President Donald Trump’s approval rating stands at 40%, and his previous double-digit lead over Vice President Kamala Harris in these states has narrowed to within the margin of error. Across all five states, Democratic Senate candidates are perceived as having better character, and voters favor their focus on economic issues, suggesting a possible path for Democrats to reclaim a Senate majority.

Why it matters

Shifts in voter sentiment could reshape the Senate balance and influence national policy before the midterms.
